The Washington Branch forms most of the eastern boundary of Howard County (although it is completely within Howard County in the Elkridge area). It includes the

magnificent Thomas Viaduct across the Patapsco River. Built from local granite, the Thomas Viaduct is over 600 feet long and includes eight arch spans. Designed by

Benjamin H. Latrobe, it is an engineering marvel. Today, 191 years after they opened, the Thomas Viaduct and the train line to Washington remain in daily use.
