On this day in Howard County history, in 1977 the first Renaissance Festival opened in Columbia
Now an established Maryland institution, the first Renaissance Festival was held in Symphony Woods near Merriweather Post Pavillion, and featured costumes, entertainment and activities inspired by Tudor England.
The Renaissance Festival was held in Columbia for its first eight seasons. In 1985 it moved to its current location in Crownsville.
