What is an Archive?

It is a repository of unique artifacts donated or collected by a person, family, or organization and preserved because of their value to scholars and the community at large. Since these items are unique, they are stored for preservation and have regulations in place to protect them for future generations.

How do I use an Archive for Research?

1. What are you trying to learn more about? For example, if your research question is, “When was the last flood in Ellicott City, MD?,” you could look up keywords like “Ellicott City” and “flood” on our online database.

2. We suggest you search our online database and write down any items that you would be interested in reviewing at the Archives during your research appointment. Can’t find anything? That’s ok! Our team is happy to assist you.

3. Once you have your research question and have reviewed our database, submit your research request using our online form at the bottom of this webpage or by emailing info@hchsmd.org. Provide as much information on the online form below . You can expect an initial reply within 3-5 business days. Please note that it may take up to 1 week for your request to be completed depending on the depth of your request.

4. A member of our team will receive your request and contact you. If we can send you something via email, we will be happy to do so if possible. If items are not digitized, we will schedule a research appointment for you to review the items. The HCHS Archives are located on the 2nd floor of Miller Branch Library, 9421 Frederick Rd., Ellicott City, MD.

Please note that the first 1/2 hour is free for non-HCHS members and the first 2 1/2 hours of research is free for HCHS members. Patrons will be notified when fees apply.

Research Request Form

Our volunteers and staff are happy to research specific inquiries using HCHS’s collection. The research fee is $20 per hour for non-members after a complimentary 30 minutes of research services. Members receive research services for free. Copies and scans are extra. The Howard County Historical Society cannot guarantee successful results for each search.
