Update on The Archaeology of Harriet Tubman and her Community
Join Archaeologist Dr. Julie Schablitsky for this special Friday Lunch Date with History presentation. Following up on her presentation at our Annual Meeting last year, she will share the latest of research on Harriett Tubman’s community.
Archaeologists from the Maryland Department of Transportation have been time traveling in the swamps of Dorchester County for over three years, looking for evidence of Harriet Tubman’s life along the underground byway. After finding the home of her father, Ben Ross, archaeologists are now pointing their shovels in the direction of Tubman’s community, a place where she married and lived with her first husband, John Tubman. Here, archaeologists are collecting the oral histories handed down from the descendants of those family and community members. This presentation will provide an update on the archaeological findings along with new stories gleaned from the Malone’s Church oral history project.
